Airport serving the city of Kochi in the southern state of Kerala is – Cochin International Airport (IATA :COK, ICAO: VOCI). The airport started as a landing strip on Willingdon Island in 1936 by British. During the World War II airstrip was converted into a military airport.

First Indian airport to be developed under Public-Private Partnership model, it is located at Nedumbassery, about 25 Km NE of Cohin. It is ranked 4th in India in terms of International traffic and handled approx. 11 million passengers in 2018-19. The Air India Express airline has its base at Kochi.
It was awarded the highest environmental honour instituted by UN – “Champion of Earth” award in 2018 when it became the world’s first fully solar powered airport with the inauguration of a dedicated solar plant.

The Indian Navy also set-up Naval Aircraft Enclave at CIAL comprising of a hangar for bigger aircraft of Navy.

The airport consists of 3 passenger terminals and 1 cargo terminal. The Terminal 1 is referred to as domestic while T2 is referred to as Executive. The latest addition Terminal 3 handles international flights and operations. Built over 4 levels and total area of more than 150,000 sq. m. The first and second level handle arrivals while level 3 and 4 handle departure.

The  dedicated cargo centre at Cochin Airport is one of the largest at in India and has 3 complexes.

1. CDC – Centre for Dry Cargo – serving warehousing and air customs inspection for both exports/imports.
2.  CPC –  Centre for Perishable Cargo – Around 22,000 sq. ft. of area , its the largest cold storage centre in India.
3. Trans-shipment Cargo Complex – Cargo from different customs warehouses in nearby areas, as well as from airports like Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, etc., are handled and stored at this centre for export.
