An International airport serving the city of Chennai is the Chennai International Airport (IATA: MAA,  ICAO: VOMM). Located 21 Km from city centre, its the 4th busiest in country. It handled over 22.5 million passengers in 2018-19. This airport is the Regional Headquarters of AAI for South states as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Kerala along with Puducherry and Lakshadweep. It is the first airport to have both International and domestic terminals adjacent to each other.

One of the first airports in India it was commissioned in 1948 and first terminal was built in 1954. A new domestic terminal got commissioned in 1985 and another international terminal came up in 1989. The old building then became Terminal 2 and is used as cargo terminal. The airport is ISO 9001-2000 certified and in 2008 AAI started its modernisation.

It is spread across a vast 1323 acre area and consists of 3 terminals. T2 for cargo, while T1 and T3 for domestic and international respectively. The international terminal got extended and hence additional block is known as T4. Several phases of modernisation has increased the handling capacity of the airport. After full integration of terminals it is expected to handle 2.3 crore passengers.

The Cargo complex at airport was established in 1978 and processing of international cargo became faster. It is spread over a 19.5 acres land and uses equipment like forklifts, high stacker etc. All the imports are handled by AAI while for exports AAI is limited to handle. In exports AAI handles only for which they are handling at airport rest of them by AI. The authorities here are planning to replace conventional warehouse management by automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS).

The airport is home for India’s biggest Air Traffic Control centre (ATC) and is equipped with radars to co-ordinate traffic for entire south above 26000 to 46000 feet.
It has 2 runways and does not have rapid exit taxiways. The secondary runway was extended to increase its length over river Adyar. After this extension, Chennai became only airport with a runway across a river.
